Why humans are so bad at thinking about climate change

The biggest problem for the climate change fight isn’t technology – it’s human psychology.

This is the first episode of Climate Lab, a six-part series produced by the University of California in partnership with Vox. Hosted by Emmy-nominated conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan, the videos explore the surprising elements of our lives that contribute to climate change and the groundbreaking work being done to fight back. Featuring conversations with experts, scientists, thought leaders and activists, the series takes what can seem like an overwhelming problem and breaks it down into manageable parts: from clean energy to food waste, religion to smartphones. Climate change warning from scientists

40 thoughts on “Why humans are so bad at thinking about climate change”

  1. I’ve never even heard about the hole in the ozone layer until now. I’m so scared that this problem that is so big right now could be forgotten and repeated in a few years. We can’t afford to repeat our mistakes anymore.

  2. I will do everything i can do from my side bcz i hate people and love animals yeah tht's it & seeing them suffer made me suffer

  3. Because everyone who claims to care about the environment like you guys just wait around for someone else to do something while not changing their lifestyles at all. While those who actually care about the environment go out and plant trees, waiting for no ones permission.

  4. The debate is completely lobsided in favour of alarmism, from some of the reactions I got over the years you'd think I'm a heretic. Just from pointing out that temperature hasn't risen as much as was predicted, that we're greening the world with CO2 fertilization and extreme weather actually hasn't increased. I'm labeled a science denier for pointing out what the data actually says is happening, and it isn't catastrophic

  5. Sometimes humans can be dimwitted idiots who never thinks about our biggest mistake we did on earth.

  6. Cognitive dissonance is a survival instinct. We spend all of our time and energy becoming who we are. When something flies in the face of that, ie shows your employer is corrupt, that your workout routine is wrong, that your political party is a bunch of selfish narcissistic sociopath xenophobe bigots, etc… It literally hurts. It lights up the pain center of the brain. The relflex is to rationalize it away or ignore it. You have to literally hold someone down and force it down their throat or show them you care and listen and slowly over along time maybe you can change them a tiny bit. Or teach children before their beliefs andthpughts are so hopelessly crystalized

  7. I really care about this issue. But i don't have any power or money to make other people actually take an action to solved this climate change issue. In fact, im majoring in petroleum eng and that industry itself already made our earth in pain. 😔

  8. Let's burn all the dollars from oil companies and show them what really they're doing

  9. Two factors warm our planet.
1- yes! It is the sun
2 – the variable orbit of our planet around the sun as proved by
    Milutin Milankovitch in the 1920's
The planet is not warmed by the volumes of hot air from the man made climate warming consensus 'scientist's' or Gore's frightener bilge cartoons aka ' inconvenient truth ' designed to frighten school kids with undeveloped critical thinking.
The sea level at Fort Denison Sydney Harbour has risen about 200 mm since 1890, official records from Sydney Maritime services, not tens of metres the frightener cartoon
    ' inconvenient truth' prophesised.
The whole climate warming soothsayings smacks of the
    Chicken Little and Foxie Loxie
    Instructive cartoon-

  10. Not all scientists are on the leftist global warming fear mongering train. It's so easy to say,"15,000 scientists issue warning about climate change…" without the proof of credentials or their politics. The leftists have proven how treacherous they are when it comes to manipulating the citizens. Propaganda and deceit are powerful tools used by the leftist Democratic Party. Enjoy the summertime.

  11. Good God , what's it like to live in this climate change ignorance…..The best thing for climate change is to burn old Tires,,,,Man , I love the smell of rubber burning in the morning..

  12. look the weight of polar meltwater is going to reactivate the Pacific ring of fire then Yellowstone will go then nuclear winter ..this is no joke people…something the government will cover over…one of the many puzzle pieces i found was in the christian bible the latter part of a verse found at reveletion 11:18 where it says "the time came for God to destroy those destroying the earth:.. this was written almost 2000 years ago there is no way they could have guessed this [ humans] …do the research time is all it cost..but it is getting more expensive…thank you.

  13. The most cataclysmic and devastating climate events to strike Earth occured thousands of years before the Industrial Revolution. If mankind has plans to arrest the currently changing climate they must include controlling solar "winds", movement of the magnetic North Pole, and volcanic activity.

  14. You warned all of us about climate change and how the oceans will rise due to glaciers melting you declare an event of biblical proportions such as Noah's Ark the Earth was consumed by water all the glaciers have melted so you say my question is what did they do during Noah's time the cars climate change the point that all look like shirts melted and the Earth flooded miles deep? Historically this planet was frozen over with glaciers completely many many years ago why did the glaciers melt? There wasn't any humans around to cause such an event to occur it happened by Nature, and as you know we cannot control nature hurricanes tornadoes tsunamis earthquakes the weather itself we can't control so what caused the mini ice age in 1700s? I asked you what day what week what month what year what decade what century what millennium did climate change start? You may not have the answer for that. I do. Climate change started at the last day of the Ice Age and has been changing since then without the cause or assistance of man.

  15. I sure hope for a catastrophic, abrupt, human extinction involving climate change scenario…..but as always with this doom and gloom predictions nothing will come of it …..

  16. Science is a liar a big, big, big liar! They have caused all extreme weather in the first place and they keep on lying b/c people trust them??? Stop trusting the villains and use your own brain.

  17. I did not like the presenter, she has her head buried in the sand – You can tell she just does not care. But great information! Lets stop climate change!
